Applying for survivors’ pension
The surviving spouse applies for a pension on the survivors’ pension application (pdf, available in Finnish). A child’s survivors’ pension application (pdf, available in Finnish) should be filled in for each child. If the application is only for a child’s pension and the deceased was not yet on a pension, the application for the child’s pension should also include information concerning the deceased (name, personal identification number and Sections 4-7).
A former spouse of the deceased applies for a pension in accordance with earnings-related pension legislation on his or her personal survivors’ pension application and encloses the decision of a court of law or agreement confirmed by the social welfare board concerning maintenance. The agreement should also specify the maintenance amount in force on the date of the death of the deceased.
If an application for survivors’ pension is being made for a child of the surviving spouse who is not a child of the deceased, the application should be accompanied by an explanation saying that the child lived permanently in the joint home of the surviving spouse and the deceased at the time of the death of the deceased spouse.
The Seafarer’s Pension Fund will process your pension application if the deceased’s last employment contract was insured with us. If the deceased worked in municipal or State employment in addition to the private sector, you will receive from us a decision that combines the pensions in accordance with all these systems. The Seafarer’s Pension Fund will also pay the entire earnings-based pension.
