A pension record is a list of your employment history that shows your earnings for employment contracts in the private sector and entrepreneurship as well as the social security benefits that affect your pension.
The record also shows information about your earnings-based pension that has accrued up to the end of the previous year.

The record does not include information about employment in the public sector, such as municipal, State or church employment, or the pension that has accrued from such employment.

Everyone living in Finland aged between 18 and 67 and who has been an employee in the private sector or an entrepreneur receives a pension record. People who have only been employed by a municipality, the State or the Church will not receive a pension record, at least not at first.
With the exception of part-time pensioners, pension recipients do not receive a pension record.

The pension insurance company where your employment contract in the private sector or entrepreneurial activities were insured at the end of the preceding year or last insured before then sends your pension record to your home by post.

For instance, if you are currently employed by the State and your last employment contract in the private sector was insured with the Seafarer’s Pension Fund, the Seafarer’s Pension Fund sends you a pension record.

You will receive your pension record for the first time in 2008. From then on, you receive a pension record annually.

If you are a Seafarer’s Pension Fund client, you will receive your pension record at the end of September.

You should check your pension record annually, just as you do the precompleted tax return form. You should especially check your earnings information. If the information is correct, you do not need to do anything. If any information needs correcting, notify the pension insurance company that sent you your record.

As a client of the Seafarer’s Pension Fund, you can notify the Fund of any changes through the Seafarer’s Pension Fund online service or on the request for correction form enclosed with the pension record.

The new Employees’ Pension Act and Seafarer’s Pensions Act (MEL) have increased employees' responsibility to check the accuracy of their earnings-related pension provision.

A pension insurance company’s responsibility to check your pension entitlement for old employment contracts has been reduced from ten to five years. The statute of limitation will gradually come into force by 2013. An employee must have written proof of the duration and salary for the oldest employment contracts (e.g. salary and employment certificate).

In 2008, everyone’s pension record is sent to his or her home by post. From then on, you can receive your pension record electronically. Go on the Seafarer’s Pension Fund LOKI online service to choose to receive your record electronically.
