Seafarer’s retirement age
General and earned retirement age
Retirement age regulations under MEL differ for crews and ship’s officers.
The general retirement age for crews and ship’s officers is 63-68 years of age. General retirement age refers to the age when all people who belong to the group concerned are entitled to retire on an old-age pension regardless of their length of service at sea.
Both crew and ship’s officers have their own earned retirement age.
The requirements for receiving a pension at the earned, or lower, retirement age are
- you have a certain amount of service at sea
- you have reached the earned retirement age during service at sea
- within the last three years, you have worked or otherwise accrued the minimum 18 months that entitle you to a pension.
