MEL pension insurance fee

Due to the reform of the Seafarer's Pensions Act, entering into force in 2016, the insurance fee will be changed. Previously, the MEL pension insurance fee was divided in half between the employer and the employee. In 2015, the share of both was 11.4% of the employee's earned income, and the payment total was 22.8% of the employee's earned income.

As of 2016, the share of the employee will be the same as the employee pension insurance fee of other employee pension legislation. The employer will be responsible for the rest of the fee.

The employee's pension insurance fee is

2017

  • 6,15 % of the earned income if the employee is under 53 years or over 62 years
  • 7,65 % of the earned income if the employee is between ages 53 - 62 years

2018

  • 6,35 % of the earned income if the employee is under 53 years or over 62 years
  • 7,85 % of the earned income if the employee is between ages 53 - 62 years

The employer's MEL pension insurance fee is

2017

  • 15.4 % of the employee's earned income

2018

  • 13.2 % of the employee's earned income

Due to the reform, the disability pensions granted to the employees of the employer can affect the amount of the employer's pension insurance fee.

The employer will deduct the employee's pension insurance fee in the payroll and pay it to the Seafarer's Pension Fund together with their own pension insurance fee.
