Services improve with the addition of a Sale shop in Harppuunakortteli – next to Turku Castle

The retail services in the Castle Town area of Turku are set to improve when Turun Osuuskauppa brings its new energy-efficient Sale shop to the Kompassi building in Harppuunakortteli.
‘Our goal is to strengthen our market share of grocery shops, particularly in the Turku region, by developing our network of traditional and online shops and by seeking out entirely new shop locations. A shop located in the harbour region will serve this goal well. At the same time, we are developing our range of services all the time throughout Southwest Finland for the benefit of our customer owners’, says Mikko Junttila, Vice President of Retail for Turun Osuuskauppa.
The building of the Kompassi complex in the Harppuunakortteli will soon be underway and is estimated for completion by autumn 2022. The grocery shop will be located in the street level business premises of Kompassi. The entire Harppunakortteli area is being built by the Seafarers’ Pension Fund. The Puosu, Majakka and Ankkuri buildings have already been completed and are occupied by tenants. The Meripoiju building is currently under construction.
‘The addition of a grocery shop in the Harppuunakortteli area will surely please a lot of people, including the current and new residents of the area as well as other consumers in the vicinity’, states Jari Puhakka, CEO of the Seafarers’ Pension Fund.
The area of the new Sale shop is 442 m2 and it will offer local customers a wide range of products during its extended opening hours. ‘Sale Kompassi is being implemented as a modern shop that reflects our new Sale concept. We want to work together with the local residents to plan services and a range of products that truly correspond to their needs. The excellent location of the shop and its good parking capacity are the shop’s undeniable strengths’, adds Junttila.
The entire Harppuunakortteli area is heated and cooled using a geothermal system into which the condensate energy of the refrigeration system of the new shop will be integrated. The shop’s condensate heat recovery will further advance the energy self-sufficiency of the entire area. Sale Kompassi will be reliant on an energy-efficient refrigeration system that uses environmentally-friendly carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant with a low emission factor. All refrigerated cabinets will be equipped with doors. The lighting in Sale Kompassi will be realised using modern, energy-efficient LED technology.
During the past year, Turun Osuuskauppa has invested in the expansion of its network and development of its services across its entire area of operation. Last year, the company opened a new S-market Manhattan in the Pitkämäki area of Turku and completely renovated its S-markets in Parainen and Lieto. Additionally, a total of 12 of Turun Osuuskauppa’s existing S-markets were updated to reflect the company’s new concept and the remaining markets will follow suit over the next few years. The Prisma markets in Mylly shopping centre and the Itäharju and Länsikeskus areas received a significant overhaul of their fruit and vegetable departments as well as their bakery and brewery departments. Itsudemo Sushibars were also opened at the Prisma market in Mylly and Itäharju. Other current projects include the large-scale expansion and renovation plan underway for S-market Wiklund Herkku and the transformation of Food Market Herkku into a true foodie’s S-market.

Harppuunakortteli is the largest building project ever undertaken by the Seafarers’ Pension Fund. The Harppuunakortteli area, which is located next to Turku Castle and close to the city centre, will consist of twelve blocks of flats that form an ecological and cosy residential hub. The area is unique in terms of its location and has been planned with warmth and the utmost professional competence. One example of that is the fact that Harppuunakortteli is the largest renewable energy site located within the Nordic countries. When all the buildings have been completed, the nearly 500 flats of different sizes will be home to around one thousand satisfied tenants. The inner yard between the buildings provides a wonderful oasis of about one hectare in size. www.harppuunakortteli.fi
