Engineer officers serve as officers in charge of engineering watch, and they supervise and manage the work in the engine room under the leadership of the chief engineer officer. The engineer officer’s task is to supervise and manage the work in the vessel’s engine room. The duties include the supervision, maintenance and repair of the ship machinery as well as the fuel and lubricant replenishments.
Education
Suitable degrees include Bachelor in Technology from a University of Applied Sciences or Vocational Qualification in Seafaring within the competence area for engineer officers.
Certifications
Depending on the manning of the vessel, a chief engineer’s, engineer officer’s or watchkeeping engineer’s certificate of competency is required. To obtain a certificate of competency, you must have completed the relevant education as well as seagoing service as specified for each level (Decree on the manning of ships, certification of seafarers and watchkeeping).
The holder of a watchkeeping engineer’s certificate of competency has the right to serve as officer in charge of engineering watch on merchant ships in foreign traffic and as chief engineer officer on vessels in domestic traffic.
The Bachelor in Maritime Engineering degree along with the required work experience gives qualification for an engineer officer’s certificate of competency at various levels. The holder of a chief engineer’s certificate of competency is qualified to serve as second or chief engineer office on merchant ships.
