Disability pension

Disability pension can be paid

  • as full disability pension if your ability to work has been reduced by at least 3/5.
  • as partial disability pension if your ability to work has been reduced by at least 2/5.
  • as rehabilitation allowance, i.e. temporary disability pension, if your ability to work is estimated to recover with the help of treatment or rehabilitation.

Before making a decision on disability pension, we must investigate your rights to retirement rehabilitation and ensure that your opportunities for rehabilitation in accordance with other legislation have been examined.

If you are applying for disability pension, your ability to work will be evaluated, taking into account your remaining ability to earn income with the type of available work you can reasonably be required to perform. In this situation, the following aspects will also be taken into consideration:

  • your education and training
  • your previous functions
  • your age
  • your place of residence

and other corresponding aspects. If you are aged 60 or older, your ability to work will be evaluated particularly from the perspective of your own profession.

  • What is the duration of disability pension payments?
A disability pension continues until the retirement age, at which point it automatically converts to an old-age pension. The old-age pension is of the same amount as the disability pension, unless you have worked in Finland alongside receiving the disability pension and thus earned additional pension. Any pension accrued alongside the disability pension must be separately applied for payment.
  • I have worked while receiving a disability pension. Does the payment of the additional accrual begin automatically?
If you have worked after the commencement of disability pension, you can apply for the payment of the additional pension accruel when you have reached your maximum retirement age and the work has ended. Pension should always be applied for.
  • Working while on a pension – Is there a specific income amount?

You can work as much as you like alongside your old-age pension and partial old-age pension, without it affecting the gross pension that you are receiving. If you work while on a disability or years-of-service pension, you can only earn a specific amount. To find out your personal earnings limit, please contact our customer service.

If you work while on a pension, you need two tax cards, one for your pension income and one for your earned income.
