Coronavirus: frequently asked questions

Does Seafarers' Pension Funds customer service function?

We serve our customers for the time being only by phone as a protective measure towards coronavirus.

If you are entitled to a lower earned retirement age and you are faced with a possible temporary layoff - how does the layoff affect the Seafarer’s Pension Act earned retirement age?

A temporary layoff has an impact on the individually earned lower Seafarer’s Pension Act (MEL) retirement age. If you have received information about a temporary layoff or you are about to be laid of and you are close to your individually earned old-age retirement, or mayby you have already decided to retire, please contact the Seafarer’s Pension Fund. We will review your situation based on your current work history and your temporary layoff situation.

Will my pension application be processed as usual? Will my pension get paid?

The Seafarer’s Pension Fund processes, grants and pays occupational pensions and - benefits as normal despite the coronavirus epidemic.

Can we get more time to be able to pay the MEL insurance premiums?

For the time being, the Seafarer’s Pension Fund cannot grant additional payment periods concerning the MEL insurance contributions. Negotiations with the authorities are going on at the moment. Shipping companies will be individually informed about this issue.
