Jari Puhakka Managing Director of the Seafarers' Pension Fund as of 1 January 2021

Kari Välimäki will retire from his current position as Managing Director of the Seafarers' Pension Fund on 31 December 2020.  The Board of the Seafarers' Pension Fund has elected Jari Puhakka, M.Soc.Sc., to follow Välimäki as the Fund's next Managing Director. Jari Puhakka is currently serving as the CIO and Substitute Managing Director at the Seafarers' Pension Fund.

Jari Puhakka has worked for more than 30 years in different investment-related positions and, for more than 13 years, within the employment pension scheme. He has focused on the navigation industry for more than two years in his current position and has served on the executive committees of various pension insurance companies and the boards of different companies. He has, thus, gained extensive experience in investment activities, the employment pension industry and the management of different types of organisations.

How to prevent and destigmatize mental health issues on board

Welcome to a workshop with Alandia, in cooperation with the Finnish Seamen’s Service, the Finnish Seamen's Mission, and the Finnish Seafarers' Pension Fund, where we will learn about and discuss  mental health. The workshop material is based on the latest research and has been created in cooperation with BLÅ-mediamentor.

After the workshop you should have knowledge and practical tools to use when discussing mental health and preventing mental health issues on board.

The workshop takes place 09.30-16.15 the 8th of October at Clarion Hotel, Tyynenmerenkatu 2, Helsinki. Workshop language is English.

Does Seafarers' Pension Funds customer service function?

We serve our customers for the time being only by phone as a protective measure towards coronavirus.

If you are entitled to a lower earned retirement age and you are faced with a possible temporary layoff - how does the layoff affect the Seafarer’s Pension Act earned retirement age?

A temporary layoff has an impact on the individually earned lower Seafarer’s Pension Act (MEL) retirement age. If you have received information about a temporary layoff or you are about to be laid of and you are close to your individually earned old-age retirement, or mayby you have already decided to retire, please contact the Seafarer’s Pension Fund. We will review your situation based on your current work history and your temporary layoff situation.

Will my pension application be processed as usual? Will my pension get paid?

The Seafarer’s Pension Fund processes, grants and pays occupational pensions and - benefits as normal despite the coronavirus epidemic.

Can we get more time to be able to pay the MEL insurance premiums?

For the time being, the Seafarer’s Pension Fund cannot grant additional payment periods concerning the MEL insurance contributions. Negotiations with the authorities are going on at the moment. Shipping companies will be individually informed about this issue.

Jari starts his post at the Seafarers' Pension Fund 19.6.2018 and he'll work together with CIO Henrik Lilius. The post is new.
